The Costume Store is affiliated to the Potters Bar Theatre Company, which was founded in 1953. Jenny and Suzanne have been looking after the vast collection of Costumes for the last few years and have gradually turned them into a hire business for both theatrical and private fancy dress hire incorporating a lot of work with schools and children’s groups. They currently operate on a part-time basis on an appointment only system; having day, evening and limited weekend appointments. The Costumes are currently stored at the Elm Court Youth and Community Centre, in Potters Bar. Because of their theatrical background, Jenny and Suzanne are able to not only provide costumes but help in designing costume plots with their knowledge of shows and plays. They have both studied eras and know that providing a costume is not just handing over a dress or suit, but involves adding the finishing touches to an outfit to get the right ‘look’. The large range of theatrical costumes also means that they are able to offer a greater variety and quality of fancy dress outfits. They pride themselves on being able to ‘put-together’ most costumes that customers request. With advance notice and for an additional charge it is also sometimes possible to commission costumes to be made for a particular character or production, if its not already in stock.
